Civil Disobedience:
A Panel on the Arts and Activism Now

How can strategies of disruption, provocation, and resistance help us envision and create more equitable, just, and beautiful societies? How can artists and activists learn from and collaborate with each other to take action and inspire public dialogue? Composed of artists-activists, Civil Disobedience takes up these questions, and reflects on the evolving relationship of protest and artistic production.

Jabari Brisport is an artist, activist, public school teacher and current candidate for the New York State Senate. He lives in Brooklyn and likes animals.

Savirti D is an artist and activist. She is the director of Reverend Billy & The Stop Shopping Choir, a fifty-person radical performance community based in New York City. Since 2001 she has staged direct actions, interventions, and spectacles in contested space all over the world and collaborated with communities to create paths of resistance and resilience. Most recently she has been deeply involved in issues of immigration, extinction, and fossil fuel extraction. She has lectured and led workshops on the topic of creative resistance at universities and festivals for more than fifteen years and frequently offers trainings for activists in New York City. The Church of Stop Shopping is the recipient of an Obie Award, the Alpert Award in the Arts, and the Edwin Booth Award in Theater.

Catherine María “Cat” Rodríguez is fundraising for a young family (30, 25, and four-months old) seeking asylum. They traveled with the Caravan, were separated at the border, and after six months apart recently reunited in New York City. To contribute, Venmo @catherinemariar with comment “FAMILIA.” catlikemeow.com Twitter: @latinadramaturg
